CEC

The Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) is the largest student engineering competition held annually in Canada. It is a four day long competition held in early March. CEC 2011 is hosted by the McGill University, Montreal from March 10th to 13th. Winners from each regional competition are invited to compete, so if you place 1st or 2nd in your competition at the Western Engineering Competition (WEC) you qualify to attend. At CEC, you will encounter some of the best and brightest engineering students from across the country.

Anyone participating in CEC will be able to showcase their talents for some very influential professionals from all over Canada. Winners will also receive significant cash prizes as CEC is able to attract many corporate sponsors each year.

For more information, please contact the Vice Stick External or see the CEC 2012 website.

The following event descriptions were taken from the CEC 2012 website:

Communications

Teams of one or two people are asked to describe a complex technical subject in layman's terms. The presentation includes the topic's social and environmental impacts, and judging is based upon overall presentation, verbal skills, and comprehension with the subject.

Consulting Engineering

Competitors in teams of four are given six hours to devise an innovative solution to a real-world problem. Teams are expected to develop holistic solutions that consider economic, social, and environmental impacts, and comprehensive their solutions to a panel of judges familiar with the industry of the problem's theme.

Extemporaneous Debate

Teams of two compete to convince judges of their assigned stance on a subject disclosed only minutes prior to the competition. Competitors are judged on their ability to present persuasive, well-constructed arguments on a wide range of topics ranging from the philosophical, to social issues, to current events.

Innovative Design

Teams present an innovative product or solution of their own design in a trade-show style demonstration area open to all conference attendees. Requiring competitors to conduct market research in addition to actual design and manufacturing, this competition is evaluated on the technical and commercial viability, functionality and/or proven prototype trials, as well as the overall presentation of the project.

Senior Design Team

Open to competitors of all ages, teams are presented with a complex engineering design problem for which a physical solution must be constructed. Teams are informed of the general topic one week in advance, and specific details are provided on the day of competition. Teams have eight hours to solve the problem with the materials provided, after which their solution is presented to a panel of judges and their prototype is tested.

Team Design

Exclusive to first and second year Engineering students, this event challenges teams of four with a physical engineering problem disclosed at the beginning of the competition period. Each team is given four hours and the necessary materials to devise a solution to the given problem, after which a formal presentation and demonstration of a working physical prototype is presented to the judges for evaluation.
